Gloria Bosman

Book now

Born in Mofolo and raised in Pimville, Soweto, Gloria’s career began in the church choir  in much the same way as her American contemporaries.  A production at the Market Theatre in 1993 earned her a scholarship to study opera at the Pretoria Technikon.  During her career she has performed live at numerous clubs, theatres and festival throughout the country (far too many to list here – you name it, she has played it)! She is a consummate performer and is able to impress and get any crowd on their feet and begging for more, interacting with them and putting her personal touch all the way. Gloria has shared the stage (both locally and internationally) with too many music greats to list here, but including the likes of: Sibongile Khumalo, Moses Molelekwa, Tananas, Sipho Mabuse, Vusi Mahlasela, Sipho Gumede, Oliver Mtukudzi, Victor Masondo and Hugh Masekela…

She now has five albums to her credit under her own name as a solo artist (and the “Sheer Sound” banner as a record company), as well as several collaborations, concept and guest feature appearances. Her latest offering, namely “Emzini”, has very recently been released to the market and is already receiving wide acclaim, airplay and feature across all media formats. This particular album is a slight departure for Gloria, with a focus on more simple African melodies and lines. That said her “Jazzy” nature is also represented in abundance here, and with two bonus “House” remixes added. All together an album with great depth, diversity and a flavour for everyone, of all ages and stages, to savour has been masterly crafted at the Jazzworx studios with Gloria as sole producer…
Messages in the album follow a similar line, one that speaks to the soul of every individual in their combinations of simplicity and complexity. The idea of past times, places and values lost and/or forgotten is revisited in the albums repertoire again and again in different and divergent ways and from many angles.

Her pervious solo release: ‘Nature Dances’ was another bold new step for this accomplished artist and she funded the recording herself.  Co-produced with Wessel van Rensburg, who was also her co-composer on many of the songs, the album consists of seven original tracks and three cover versions.  Gloria also wrote three of the original tracks – ‘Play Me the Love Songs’, ‘Dance’ and ‘Nature Dances’.  These tracks assisted in Gloria’s scooping that years SAMA (South African Music Award) for “Best Female Composer.” The album was awesomely received in the marketplace and received no less than 6 SAMA nominations that year! Gloria feels the album represents her sweetest, softest side and every song sounds like she is smiling as she sings.  She feels Wessel has reached into her soul and found that delicate part she never knew she had.

The album title is about the dance of nature, from the time the egg is fertilised to the birth of the baby – the dance that happens inside the mother’s womb.  We are all part of this circle.
'The Many Faces of Gloria Bosman', her second solo album, featured some of the finest musicians in South Africa, and has earned her two nominations at the prestigious 2001 Kora Awards for Best Southern African Artist and Most Promising Female Artist.  She was also a SAMA (South African Music Award) nominee for Best Jazz Vocal Album.  Other albums include ‘Stop and Think’, which earned her two nominations at the 2003 South African Music Awards in the categories of Best Female Artist and Best Jazz Vocal Album.

Her debut album ‘Tranquillity’, produced and arranged by pianist Paul Hanmer, earned her the South African Music Award for Best Newcomer.  She was a SAMA finalist in three categories for ‘Tranquillity’ – Best Female Artist, Best Newcomer, and Best Contemporary Jazz Album.

Gloria’s drive and talent have enabled her to break into the Afrikaans music market, where she has developed a relationship with new fans through this interaction.  She has appeared at many of the major Afrikaans music festivals, including KKNK, Aardklop and Skouspel in Sun City.  Gloria was also recently part of a project called ‘Al Daai Jazz’, which were jazzy rearrangements of Afrikaans songs.

Her first music video ‘Amaqwati’ was nominated for a “Channel O” music video award for Best Afro-Jazz video.  This talented artist has also been nominated for the All African “KORA” Awards for Best Southern African Artist.
