The Reflections Story
Founded in 2003 by Raymond Mahlangu, Reflections is a cover band that is a step above the typical bands seen on the local circuit. Partygoers that witness the spectacle that is “Reflections“ come away awestruck that the band can put out that much sound and still be entertaining and fun. Armed with a large repertoire of Pop, R & B , Modern Jazz & African music styles and melodic sensibility, Raymond brings 18 years of musical experience, arrangement and song writing to the group. His absolute passion for music has been fired up by jazz greats like George Benson , Earl Klugh , Larry Carlton. He has performed on a session basis, both live and in the studio with some of the most renowned musicians in the country.
To form this powerful band, Raymond knew he needed some of the best players in the business to compliment and work with;
Lindi Maxolo’s quiet and sultry demeanor, makes her the perfect lead singer for this extraordinary band. She has a surprisingly big voice for one so small in stature. She handles genres as diverse as standard Jazz, Afro Jazz, Rhythm & Blues, as well as Pop music with the ease of a seasoned professional. Which is no surprise, considering the list of names she has worked with? She’s done high profile gigs with the UCT Orchestra, Uct big Band, Malaika and The Cape Town Philharmonic, to name a few.
Edwin Marlon Shaun Steyn, Originally a Capetonian but now based in Joburg, the bassist studied music at the University of Cape Town. This multi talent musician is a songwriter, plays guitar and sings. Eddie also arranges music for recording artists as well as tutor upcoming musicians. His carrier began at the Light House Ministries Church where he wrote, produced and arranged all the music. Edwin has also been playing with various outstanding musicians over the last 10 years including Robbie Jansen, Vusi Khumalo, Tony Paco and many more.
Llewellyn George – this very talented piano and keyboard player has won the Chopin Showcase Piano Recital in 1994. Also from Cape Town, Llewellyn was a perfect addition to the band because apart from his instrumental skills he also has a smooth voice that compliments Lindi’s when performing soulful duets. He brings a wealth of knowledge in arranging and producing music as well as mentorship. Jimmy Dludlu, Sibongile Khumalo, Robbie Jansen and Gavin Minter are just a few of the top musicians that Llewellyn has shared the stage with.
Charles Kenneth Williams on drums is the heartbeat of the band. Kenneth is charismatic, creative and has a self-confidence about him that is evident when he plays. His broad knowledge of different genres like R&B, Pop, Jazz and African music has made him one of the most outstanding and sought after musicians in the country. He too brings to Reflections years of experience working with the likes of Alwyn Dyers, Lionel Petersen, Sibongile Mngoma and others.
Neil Engel belts out the trumpet like a professional he is. His cool and collective persona fits perfectly with the band image. Neil has worked with artist namely Tucan Tucan, Jimmy Dludlu, Allou April, Robbie Jansen, Jaco Maria, Mark Goliath as well as Innerchild. This versatile trumpeter can play all music genres from African Music, Jazz, Pop, Soul, R&B, Classical and Latin music. He has also performed as a trumpeter in the Cape Philarmonic Orchestra.
George Munetsi, the resident DJ & MC completes the Reflections Band package. George is an A-List DJ with his own show on Kaya FM Radio Presenter and has made several appearances on both television and the big screen. Some of the television programs he has appeared on are Behind the Badge, Generations, Isidingo and The Rez. George is well respected in his field and has the ability to make every function lively and entertaining.
What makes Reflections different from the rest of the other bands out there? One word, TALENT!!! Reflections is composed of seasoned musicians with backgrounds from all musical styles playing together in a sort of organized chaos. Reflections’ sheer versatility is what sets them apart, far apart from most bands that play the same tired old songs night after night.
