MARTIN JONAS is the boykie from Potchefstroom via Kempton Park. He is undoubtedly the fresh-faced future of comedy in South Africa. Discovered at South Africa’s first real comedy club, Hysterix in Johannesburg, Martin has impressed audiences with his novel style and pertinent observational humour. He is South African to his fingertips and was the only performer to receive a standing ovation at the inaugural Smirnoff Mule Comedy Festival at the Baxter Theatre in Cape Town in October 1997. Martin was invited by Joe Parker to be the support act on his “First Farewell Tour” of December / January 1997/98. In April 1998 Martin was chosen by M-Net to compere their “It’s a funny Country” special from the Karoofees in Oudtshoorn.
Since then his reputation has grown significantly. Martin was invited to appear in the Smirnoff Mule Comedy Festival in October 1998 in both Durban and Cape Town at the Playhouse Theatre and Baxter Theatre respectively. His performance was described as “Novel, exciting…. Heading for stardom” by the press in Cape Town. In March of 2002 Martin was included in the line-up of comedians at the South African Comedy Festival in London – to rave reviews.
Martin Jonas is a firm favourite on the stand-up comedy club scene, having headlined at all the Comedy Express venues and big comedy functions such as the 5fm Comedy Jams as well as recently at the Kingsize Comedy Events nationwide. As a result Martin is becoming hugely popular for corporate functions countrywide.
His show is delivered in both English and Afrikaans and covers just about all aspects of the South African lifestyle.
“This young lad is the brightest prospect I have seen since Barry Hilton” – JOE PARKER
