Skwatta Kamp even though on the heels of another classic gold album never rests on their laurels, they are always grinding always pushing the envelope to the next level. Whenever Slick, Shugasmakx, Nish, Flabba, Bozza, Nemza and Infa pick up their pen and pads they are always ready to deliver a master piece.
SKWATTA KAMP has seen life take a turn for the better in the last three years since the now legendary "RAU RAU." off the BUTTABING ENTERTAINMENT independent release “KHUT EN JOYN” album.
As planet hiphop becomes more predictable and most fold into manufactured formula acts, SKWATTA KAMP follows a road less travelled opening the audience up to 3D hip-hopping and emceeing.
Skwatta Kamp has never been in anyone’s shadow - it’s just not their style!
That is why over the last few winters they have been able to warm-up Skwatta heads with heat off their albums which has seen them walk away with 2 South African Music Awards for Best Rap in 2003 and 2004;a MetroFM Awards for Best Hiphop award in 2003,Best Kwaito/Hiphop Group at the KIdz Star Awards in 2005 and don’t forget the Source Award International Artist Of The Year Nomination in 2004,Best Hiphop Video 2005 – Channel O Video Music Awards …
But the best of all the awards because of its vote of confidence, is the Karan/Ratanda Community Award, its from the people and Skwatta Kamp is about people.
With their forth bullet in succession aptly named Washmkhukhu (nominated for Best Rap at the South African Music Awards (SAMA 11) 2005), once again Skwatta Kamp brought heat a fireman would take a bar-one to.
The latest album titled WASHMKHUKHU was the next milestone in the group’s journey, as Shuga says “Skwatta Kampain our first album released through – the group was campaigning to be a force to be reckoned with, the second album was called Khut En Joyn – this one saw the evolution of the group with the seven members of the group starting to gel as a unit “Cutting and joining” their unique characteristics to give the group its personality as we have come to know it today both released through our peoples at BUTTABING ENTERTAINMENT, with Mkhukhu Funkshen that is when the group started to work like a well oiled machine and with WASHMKHUKHU the group is on top of its game and long into its stride”
The members Slick, Shugasmakx, Nish, Flabba, Bozza, Nemza and Infa bring an eclectic, soulful; well rounded; no holds barred Joburg internationally acclaimed reality hiphop to the masses.
They have come a long way from Skwatta Kampain (debut album 2001) to Khut En Joyn (2002) both released through the well respected indie hiphop label BUTTABING ENTERTAINMENT to Mkhukhu Funkshen (2003)and now WASHMKHUKHU (2004/5) through Gallo Record Company still consistent and still as hungry as ever.
They haved performed on the same stage as Talib Kweli, Dead Prez, Jeru, Black Thought, Ludacris, Basement Jaxx, Will Smith on the Black August Hiphop Tour and MTV Concerts in recent times and many others.
These days there are so many emcees in the market that some listeners have a hard time distinguishing which emcee is which but not so with Skwatta Kamp.
Definition Of The Group’s Name
Skwatta Kamp (pronounced Skwa-tah Camp) is derived from the word Squatter Camp which are shantytowns littered around South Africa’s open landscapes. The people who live in these settlements are seen as outcasts and a nuisance. This is the situation in the music industry that Skwatta Kamp finds themselves in, where their form of music is not seen as an art form but a passing fad not worth mentioning in high regard. Therefore Skwatta Kamp, as a group name firstly, identifies us as South African and also just like the attitude of squatter camp residents, a defiant force (in the case of the group) in the quest to make hiphop as an art form become accepted generally in the manner we present it and not defined in accordance to intellectual philosophies and scientific theories to music. |
