Nik Rabinowitz grew up on a farm outside Cape Town where he learnt to climb trees, make pots and speak Xhosa. After graduating from UCT with a Business Science Degree he travelled Southern Africa with a theatre company and a herd of donkeys. It’s no coincidence his stand-up comedy career began shortly thereafter, appearing on Comedy Showcase as renowned Zimbabwean donkey-rustler Jabulani Ndlovu.
Nik then shot to fame as the multilingual presenter of SABC 1’s Coca-Cola Mega Millions Game Show. His boundless energy coupled with an animated and fluent use of English, Xhosa and Afrikaans endeared this white farm boy to millions of South African television viewers.
His stand-up comedy did not take a backseat to his television career though, as his live performances have continued to feature in a number of local and international comedy festivals over the past few years. Recent appearances include storming the Cape Town International Comedy Festival and headlining the inaugural South African Comedy Awards for SABC 2.
Television audiences might also remember Nik as M-Web’s train-surfing lycra-bodysuit guy or as the guy persuading the tough female traffic cop to run into the post-office for his grandmother while he sat in his car double-parked on the road. Rabinowitz’s hilarious facial expressions and his trademark quirkiness have landed him roles in both local and international television commercials. His immense skill has also meant an awesome amount of travel across the African continent while performing for various organizations.
He’s produced and starred in three one-man shows: The Life and Times of Klasie Kakpraat; Anyone Seen my Goat? as well as the acclaimed One Man One Goat which took Johannesburg by storm in early 2008, playing to packed houses at The Civic Theatre. With an impressive grasp of multiple languages, and a passion for connecting people and cultures, Nik Rabinowitz is establishing himself as an outstanding and unique South African entertainer.
