REMIX is a collaboration between the highly acclaimed electric violinists, Elena Zlatkova and Kristel Birkholtz, and dynamic electric cellist, Carol Thorns.

This dynamic trio performs striking and unforgettable performances of Classical remixes and well-known favourites.  Remix gives new life to the works of composers such as Vivaldi and Beethoven with a high impact and energetic electric string show.  The repertoire showcases the technical skills of the performers, as well as their musical versatility.

In their individually capacity, Elena, Kristel and Carol are renowned performers with many years of experience.  Combined, they are a force to be reckoned with.  Their show is an original and mesmerising collaboration that has been met with praise and enthusiasm from critics, fans and clients.

CAROL THORNS

South Africa’s leading cellist, Carol has performed at over 200 top events including the Elton John Charity Ball, Cape Town Fashion Week, Kirstenbosch Summer Concert Series, Vodacom July, Presidents Cup (Fancourt), Fancourt Spring Ball etc.

She has appeared extensively in the media for the last three years including an interview on Top Billing, ETV Nightlife, Morning Live etc.  She has been photographed and interviewed for Cosmopolitan Magazine, Top Billing Magazine, Style, Sarie and numerous daily newspapers     Her performing career has taken her beyond South Africa’s borders to the Baltic Sea (on 6 day cruise for Coca Cola) and to Edinburgh for an international corporate event

She completed her Bachelor of Music degree Cum Laude majoring in ‘Cello performance at Rhodes University in 1997.  In addition she completed cello Performing Licentiates through the Royal Schools of Music (RSM) and Unisa (University of South Africa), as well as the RSM Cello Teaching Licentiate.

Subsequently she performed with orchestra’s both locally (PE Philharmonic) and in the UK (Kensington Philharmonic) and in numerous chamber music groups. 
Carol founded the acclaimed group, Muse SQ / Electro-Muse in 2002 for which she was both manager and cellist.   She initiated the CODA venture in September 2005.

Carol has shared the stage the stage with many of South Africa’s top musicians including Arno Carstens, Yvonne Chaka-Chaka and Soweto String Quartet (at the Elton John show).  Carol performed at Bidvest ‘Eisha’ 2005 with Elena Zlatkova, TK, Loyiso, Juanita Kruger and the Johannesburg Philharmonic. 

She has performed on various albums: Arno Carstens Hello Good-bye Boys; Jason Glover Breathe  and the 2005 Levi’s sponsored HIV / Aids compilation album (Flat Stanley, Fokofpolisiekar, Godessa, Arno Carstens etc)

Kristel is an accomplished violinist, having studied a BMus at Wits University and played with various orchestras and ensembles. As a solo artist, her repertoire ranges from light classical through to well-known jazz and popular tunes, which add a touch of class.  The characteristic sound of the violin can be complimented by professional backtracks or live guitar and light percussion.

She has performed at numerous prestigious events amongst others for Nelson Mandela. She has performed solo roles at the Barnyard Theatres, played at festivals such as Oppikoppi, played with Watershed and appeared as a violinist in the local soapie "Backstage".
