Kwazulu-Natal-born tenor, Jannie Moolman started his opera career in 1990 after completing his degree in Communications at the University of the Orange Free Sate.
He has studied under some of South Africa’s most respected voice teachers including Gudrun Barella, Martia Napier and Eric Muller.
In 1992 he became a soloist with the Pretoria State Theatre and undertook roles in productions which included Attila, Der Rosonkavalier, Lucia di Lammermoor, Pagliacci, Le Nozzi de Figaro, Idomeneo, Der Fliegende Holländer, Turandot, Manon Lescaut, Fidelio Salomé.
Jannie Moolman made his debut at the Cape Town opera as René in the Count of Luxembourg in 1994, where he has also been seen as Tamino (Die Zauberflöte), Pinkerton (Madam Butterfly) and Don José (Carmen).
Other lead roles include La Boheme, Don Pasquale, La Traviata, Rigoletto, Die Entfürung aus dem Sérail, Un Ballo in Maschera and Nabucco.
He has performed at several festivals including Spier, Klein Karoo National Atrts Festival, Aardklop and Grahamstown.
Jannie Moolman is the recipient of several awards: The FNB Vita Life Award for most promising singer as Arturo in Lucia di Lammermoor (1992) and the State Theatre/SAA Opera Foundation Award (1993). Jannie came second in the Marsala International Singing competition in Italy and also received the FNB Vita Life Award for the most outstanding performance by a male singer (1997). He received third place in the acclaimed Belvedere International Singing Competition in Vienna and in 1998 he won yet another FNB Vita Life Award for his performance as Dominee Venter in Roelof Temmingh’s Buchuland. He was further nominated for another FNB Vita Life Award for his outstanding performance as Prince Karl Franz in The Student Price, which was performed in Bloemfontein, Pretoria and Durban in 1999.
Jannie Moolman’s concert career includes performances in Händel’s Messiah, Schubert’s Mass in G, Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony, Missa Solemnis, Mozart’s Requiem and Coronation Messe, Rossini’s Stabat Mater and Messe Solennelle and Verdi’s Requiem.
Jannie has performed with conductors the likes of Gabar Otvös, Carlo Franci, Gérard Korsten, Bruno Aprea and Reinhard Schwarz.
He has performed in Austria, Germany, England, Hong Kong, China and various African Countries.
JannieMoolman is also a member of the acclaimed group ONS EIE DRIE TENORE.
He also performs with Karen Meiring in a production: Klassieke Pelle / Classical Pals, scripted and directed by Janice Honeyman.
